WOG Ltd is a newly established Brazilian importing and exporting company that imports garlic and onions from China; two products that Brazil consumes throughout the whole year. "For now, we will import garlic and onions for the 35 million consumers in the market of southern Brazil," said the company's executive director, Otilio Lorenzo.
The company will begin importing these products in March, once the Brazilian onion season comes to an end. "This year, there has been a 30% excess of rain, which lowered the onion's quality, so we'll start importing earlier," said Lorenzo. He also stated they were interested in the Chinese market because the Netherlands, the country from which Brazil normally imports onions, was not producing big enough sizes this year.
The quality and prices of the Chinese garlic are very attractive for Brazil. China produces two main types of garlic, and between them, they have production available for most of the year. "A 10 kg box of garlic from China costs about $ 6 , its cheaper than in Brazil," said Lorenzo. Brazil also tends to import garlic from Argentina and Spain at this time of the year, even though they are more expensive.
This new company doesn't have a website yet, but it is located in the central market in São José, Santa Catarina (Brazil).
