The Bulgarian Ministry of Agriculture has reported an increase in the import of fresh fruit and vegetables between January and November last year.
During those eleven months, the country imported 211 thousand tonnes of fresh vegetables and 240 thousand tonnes of fresh fruit, which is 18 and 6% more than in the same period of the previous year.
The vegetables with the most considerable increases were potatoes, tomatoes and sweet peppers, with a growth of between 18 and 32% in their supply. Onion imports, however, decreased by 7 percent.
When it comes to fresh fruit, the leading imports were of products not grown in the country, such as bananas and citrus fruits. There has been a considerable growth in the supply of melons, apples and peaches, ranging between 10-20%.
As regards exports, fresh vegetable shipments during the first eleven months of 2015 dropped by 23% to 18 thousand tonnes, while fresh fruits grew by 21% to 39 thousand tonnes. The most significant decrease in exports was observed with onions, cabbage and potatoes. Meanwhile, exports of tomatoes and carrots increased.
