"Celeriac is a very popular with our customers,” states Wilhelm Andree of the company Willi Andree situated at the fresh food market Düsseldorf, “At the moment the demand is very large and the price and quality are alright too.” The company Willi Andree grows its own celeriac. “We cultivate our own celeriac,” explains Andree, “We sell the produce the entire year, until the end of May or the beginning of June the celeriac is grown in the open field after that the celeriac is grown in greenhouses.”

A company filled with tradition
The company Willi Andree is a traditional family business at the fresh food market Düsseldorf. And now the third-generation of Andree is leading the wholesale company in Dusseldorf. The production centre of the company is very close. During the summer and winter months several German vegetables such as red cabbage, kale, rapini (turnip tops) and endives are grown there.

A kilo for 60 cents
“Especially the versatility of the product convinces the customers,” according Andree, “Celeriac can be very well used in soups, salads, or warm dishes.” Celeriac is packaged in 10-kilo boxes without green and coolly stored. “The price for a kilo celeriac is currently 60 cents,” tells the experienced wholesaler.

Import
The wholesale company in Düsseldorf also sells imported products in addition to their own production. “There are products that need sunshine and higher temperatures. We have to import those products. That is often cheaper than cultivation in a greenhouse,” states Wilhelm Andree, “In the winter period we have less products from our own fields. At the moment we have rocket salad and rapini from our own greenhouses, and soon we will have various lettuce varieties such as Lollo Rosso."
