Mr Mariusz Dziwulski, an analyst at BGZ BNP Paribas, stated that the prices of apples in Poland this season will be heavily influenced by the high supply and the fact that fewer apples can be withdrawn from the market. "Moreover, we still expect weak demand in foreign markets."

Data from the Ministry of Agriculture show that the average purchase price of dessert apples in Poland in the first two weeks of September, amounted to an average of 0.95 złoty/kg (0.22 Euro) and was about 33 percent lower than in the same period a year ago and similar to that of September 2014, i.e. right after the introduction of the Russian embargo, he explains.

"The impact of the absence of the Russian market is still clearly visible. Eurostat data show that total exports of Polish apples in the season 2015/2016 amounted to 968 thousand tonnes; approximately the same as in the season 2014/2015 (966 thousand tonnes), as well as 14 and 23 percent below those of two and three seasons earlier," said the analyst.

It is worth noting that exports are still made at relatively low prices. "The value of exports of apples in the season 2015/2016 amounted to just over 294 million Euro, which was admittedly, 1.3 percent more than in the season 2014/2015, but up to 23 and 35 percent less than two and three seasons before," he concluded.
