In the state of Sokoto in northern Nigeria, farmers have said that a recent flood cut spinach production. Consequently, the price of the vegetable has increased, troubling consumers. The vegetable, which is also referred to as ‘Green’ in Nigeria, has high a consumption rate, as it is one of the most common vegetables used in soup preparation.
The price of the vegetable has risen by over 100 per cent.
Chairman of the Spinach Sellers Association, Alhaji Bello Kane, explained: “The recent flood adversely affected the production of the vegetable which is brought from the Fadama land areas. The lands got too cold for the plant to grow while the planted ones turned reddish and later got destroyed hence the shortage of supply in the market.”
He said as a result, the price of an average bundle of spinach rose from N400 to N1,000. It recently went down a bit to N800.
