Producers of tropical fruits in Malaga have opted mainly for two varieties: the Osteen in the case of mangoes, and the Hass in the case of avocados; however, experts and researchers believe that this poses a risk to the sector, since the production is excessively concentrated within a short period, especially in the case of mangoes. This fruit, once ripe, if not cut, ends up falling. Avocados, on the other hand, have the advantage of staying on the tree if they are not harvested.

In any case, researchers have advised moving forward towards diversification with both crops. To this end, research centres such as the Institute of Subtropical and Mediterranean Horticulture (IHSM) La Mayora are studying the behaviour of different mango varieties that may be of interest to producers and the market. Among them, the most noteworthy for their quality are the Irwin (among the early ones), the Ataulfo and Kent (as regards mid-season varieties) and the Keitt (for the late harvest). According to Iñaki Hormaza, researcher at La Mayora, the results of the tests carried out with these varieties reveal that it is possible to produce quality Spanish mangoes outdoors from early September to late November by combining different varieties.

As for avocados, in Malaga the production campaign of the main varieties lasts from September to May. It kicks off with the green skin varieties (Fuerte and Bacon) and continues with the Hass, which has rough skin and becomes darker as it matures and is also the most common one in the province.

There are others, such as the Lamb Hass, Pikerton or Zutano, which have a thinner skin; however, there is one variety, the Reed, which researchers prefer for the summer months (harvested between April and late July), when it is normal for imported avocados to be consumed in Malaga.
