The volume of Vietnamese rambutan in the international market will be affected in the coming months due to the bad weather conditions there have been in the production areas. The high salinity of the soil has affected the volume of fruit in the trees. As a result, the price of the Java and Thai varieties are at around $4 and $4.5 per kilo, respectively, i.e. 10% higher than last year.
"We have the advantage that Vietnam produces rambutan throughout the whole year, but not always the same volumes," said Lotus, of Hasuko Import Export Co. This sets them apart from their main competitor in the international scene, Thailand, which has a production that runs from May to September.
At present, the demand for this fruit has increased and countries like Oman, Dubai, and the USA are becoming regular consumers of this product. Hasuko Import Export Co. produces an average of 100,000 tons per year, which they distribute in almost equal parts between the local market and the international market.
