Despite the dry weather, the early carrot was still able to grow enough, according to Willem de Boer of W. de Boer en Zn. “The carrot from Limburg will be slightly poorer because it’s more difficult to irrigate there. In the north of the Netherlands, plenty of water is available. Sizes aren’t quite there yet, but they’re large enough for harvesting. I expect the harvest of storage carrots will start later than in previous years due to the dry weather.”
August is a calm month, and many carrot growers choose to go on holiday. This does not result in extra trade for Willem de Boer en Zn at the moment. “It’s actually even calmer than in previous years. A lot is sent to the UK around this time normally, but they’re still harvesting as well, just like in Eastern Europe. I can therefore not confirm the reports that there’s a significant shortage of carrot.”
Willem, however, isn’t worried about the current situation. “The market is alright, and prices are good. Large carrots sell for around 44-45 cent. You could sell for less, but I don’t expect that would result in higher sales. Perhaps the situation will change if it stays dry for much longer.”
