The Castellon-based cooperative La Llosa loaded seven trucks with a total of 540 boxes containing thousands of Roma plum tomatoes that are "super-ripe", so that nobody can get hurt when hit by them. That is the great secret of the Tomatina, which guarantees fun at one of the most international parties around the world.
The manager of the cooperative, José Ramón Mechó, explained that the tomatoes come from the municipalities of Xilxes, La Llosa, Moncófar, Almenara, Benicarló and Hellín, and that if they were not used for the Tomatina they would not be harvested, because they are not suitable for either fresh consumption or canning.
