Core Tip: The cabbage market has had a few dismal years.
The cabbage market has had a few dismal years. Now, it seems this market is off to a good start in the new season with early cabbage. "The supply and demand are in balance", says Richard Kruijer of the Dutch agricultural association, Tuindersbelang. There was an over-production of this vegetable in the last season. Prices were at a low level across Europe for a long time. Prices only increased toward the end of the storage season.

Lower production is expected. This is due to the extreme weather conditions experienced over the past summer. The bad cabbage years also made for the shrinkage of the European acreage. These factors have led to a demand market with satisfying prices. "The price for white cabbage is at around EUR0,40 per kg", says Richard. The demand is coming from Western Europe, and it is wide. The cabbage is going to not only Germany, France, and England but also Spain and Italy.

It is now about cabbage from plots that were planted early. How the harvest for stored cabbage will look depends on the coming weeks. The current weather conditions make for fertile growth. "The majority of the cabbages will be harvested in October. We, therefore, have a few weeks to wait and see what the yields of storage cabbages will look", concludes Richard.
