"The price of Chinese ginger in the European market began to rise between early to mid-February, and this development continued until the end of the month. The price then returned to reasonable levels." This is according to Jason, Sales Manager of Anqiu Tailai Foods Co., Ltd.
"There are several reasons for this price readjustment. First, the price of fresh ginger was higher than the price of yellow ginger between middle to late December and early January. Many European buyers expected the price to come down, so they temporarily stopped buying ginger. Second, many factories closed down during Chinese Spring Festival [February 5th, 2019]. This put an effective stop to processing of ginger for export trade. As a result of this supply shortage the price of Chinese ginger export to Europe temporarily increased during early to middle February."
"In addition, the price of ginger on the Chinese market also increased in late January. This development in the domestic market had its consequences for the price of Chinese ginger export to Europe as well. I believe that the current price drop is a reasonable readjustment, the price returns to reasonable levels."
"Our company currently has around 1,200 tons of organic ginger, which is enough to satisfy the demand of all our clients. The main competition to Chinese organic ginger in the international market comes from organic ginger from Peru. The price of Peruvian organic ginger is extremely high, which leads many clients to turn to Chinese organic ginger suppliers. As for product quality, Peruvian organic ginger is quite delicate but spicy, while Chinese organic ginger is relatively big and fat, with a high water content. The flavor is not that spicy. However, to satisfy the varied demands from our clients we also plant some smaller ginger varieties that closely resemble Peruvian ginger. They are quite popular with our clients."
"As for the price, organic ginger is about 20%-30% more expensive than regular ginger, but this difference in price has grown smaller in recent years. The number of organic ginger processing factories is growing and competition becomes more intense. We mainly export our ginger to markets in Europe and North America. It is therefore very important to us to develop our organic ginger plantation, which is the main focus of European ginger markets."
