Pakistan has set a target to cultivate potatoes over 465,400 ha of land, onions on 216,800 ha and tomatoes on 65,600 ha during the 2019-20 rabi (winter crop) season. The aim is to fulfil the domestic consumption, as well as to increase exports.
During the current rabi season, the production targets for potatoes were fixed at 4,869,000 tons, onions at 2,105,900 tons, whereas tomato production was fixed at 600,900 tons to tackle the local requirements, said an official in the Ministry of National Food Security and Research.
Meanwhile, 11,800 hectares of land was set for cultivating onions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in order to produce about 690,500 tons and in Balochistan it would be cultivated 34,000 hectares to produce over 680,000 tons respectively, he added.
