The prolonged drought that has hit the Mexican state of Veracruz has caused the loss of at least 20,000 hectares of citrus. According to Marcelino Bustos Castillo, the director of safety of the Costa de Veracruz citrus packer, the problem has been exacerbated by the late arrival of the rains, which will increase the problems in the fruit's quality.
It will take at least five to seven months, depending on the magnitude of the damage in the plantations, to normalize the region's Persian lime production and achieve a quality harvest.
Bustos Castillo said that it was time to test good agricultural practices since flowering should be taken care of, combat Diaphorina citri, and properly fertilize and conduct foliar activities so that the production of the next harvest can be improved.
He reiterated that the rains arrived a little late, that the damage was already done, and that it was now time to get to work and properly take care of the orchards to restore the quantity and quality of their Persian lime.
