Bangladesh self-sufficient regarding crops and vegetable production

Due to the adoption of agriculture-friendly policies and activities, the nation of Bangladesh has achieved self-sufficiency in granular crops, vegetables, fish and meat production. The country is currently placed fourth in paddy production, third in vegetables production, eighth in potato production and seventh in mango production in the world.

Food minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder stated this while addressing a seminar to mark World Food Day in the city’s Krishibid Institution yesterday. State minister for fisheries and livestock Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru, lawmaker Abdul Mannan, FAO Bangladesh representative Robert D Simpson, Dhaka University professor Nazma Shahin, ICDDRB senior director Dr Tahmid Ahmed and several scientists also spoke on the occasion.

Thailand’s Institute of Nutrition of Mahidol University director Prof Visith Chavasit presented the keynote paper at the seminar. “The main objective of Work Food Day is to create awareness against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. The present government is relentlessly working to build Bangladesh into a poverty-free country,” Sadhan Chandra Majumder told.
