The affluent and the moderate income groups have together held more than 65% of the Syrups & Spreads market in the UK in 2011, finds a report by Canadean – Food.
The report Consumer Trends in the Syrups & Spreads Market in the UK, 2011, says the affluent section of the UK society formed 44% of the market and the moderate income group 25% while the least share of 5.3% was held by the highly affluent.
Consumers aged above 55 consumed the highest share of syrups & spreads at 33.5% followed by kids & babies aged up to nine at 16%. Those aged 25 to 34 years consumed the least at 7.3%.
The male-female consumption ratio was equal, while the urban-rural share was 69-31.
Indulgence with 29% and personal space and time with 22% have been the most influencing trends that drove the syrups & spreads consumers.
People with more than seven hours of leisure time held 44% of the market share, while those with less than one hour time held only 4%.
Consumers educated up to upper secondary held 26% and those with primary level of education held only 3% of the market.
Savory spreads with 45% formed a major part of the market, followed by Sweet spreads at 31%, Jams, Jellies & Preserves at 22%, Syrups 1.3% and Molasses 0.2%.
The overall market was majorly owned by branded products while the private labels marginally dominated in the category of Molasses at 53%.
