L’isola d’Oro anchovies have achieved Friend of the Sea certification. The anchovies are caught in the FAO 37 Northern Adriatic Sea by Croatian artisanal fishing vessels using purse seines.
The vessels use ‘lampara’ — a lamp that attracts anchovies to the surface. Sonar controls help spot anchovies which swim in large single species shoals, so no other species are caught in the process.
“When choosing the most reliable sustainability certification program, we selected Friend of the Sea as it is applying the strictest criteria and its label is visible and respected in the markets we target,” said Donatella Zarott, marketing director of L’isola d’Oro. “Anchovies fishing method is highly selective, energy efficient and it has negligible impact on the environment. Furthermore we engage at sourcing from stocks within the maximum sustainable yield and in compliance with minimum size and quotas.”
