Besides adopting the hook and line to catch tuna fish, the fishermen were advised to preserve the catch hygienically. Tuna has a considerable market in Japan, where people consume the raw meat known as ‘Sashimi Grade tuna’, according to R. Balasubramanian, Senior Project Manager, Reliance Foundation, (RK4SD) – Reliance Knowledge for Sustainable Development.

The fishermen were sensitized on on-board handling. Focus was given to removing the blood and liver from the fish and then to carve out the meat before preserving it in a fish-hold made of polyurethane foam. Priority was accorded to maintain freshness of the fish so as to enhance its market value.

“Since tuna is a migratory fish, the only alternative to trawl net fishing is hook and line method. This variety of fish exists below the thermo cline, which means a layer in the ocean in which temperature changes rapidly with depth”, C. Ravindran, a Retired Joint Director of Fisheries, explained. Citing quality standards, Mr. C. Ravindran said besides sashimi grade, steak and loins could also be processed to meet the requirements of importing countries. Possibilities could also be explored to manufacture canned tuna, he added.
