It could take another 6 weeks before leafy vegetables return to normal prices after a reduction in supply from the US.
Greg Holmes with BC Fresh says bad weather in Arizona, California, and northern Mexico is causing a shortage of leafy greens which means supply is down and demand is the same.
“Certain areas have just been hit hard as far as frost damage and they’ve had to abandon fields and just move on to other areas that have better supply,” explains Holmes.
Holmes says prices will start to decrease as other supply areas begin to move into growing season.
“Mexico and other southern American states…Texas is just starting to come back on stream with some crops like cabbage, but lettuces will take a little while to get back on track again,” he adds.
