The UK government plans to introduce calorie labels on the bottles of wine, spirits and beer sold in the country to control consumers from over consumption of alcoholic drinks.

According to a recent survey by alcohol education charity DrinkAware Trust, high calories of alcohol drinks are directly related to consumers being overweight and obese.

The survey also revealed that two glasses of wine accounts for 400cal, which is equivalent to consuming a beefburger.

Through this initiative ministers intend to reduce the anti-social behavior and deaths caused due to alcohol consumption in the country.

Health Minister Anna Soubry said they are working with the drinks industry to introduce the plans of labeling the alcoholic drinks.

Some retailers like Co-Op already showcase calorie details on their beer, wine, cider and spirits brands, while other retailers like Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco are working with the Department of Health to introduce the plan.

Department of Health spokesperson said, "By the end of this year, 80 per cent of all alcoholic drinks on shop shelves will include clear labelling on units and health messages."
