Alhóndiga La Unión expects to launch a new line of packaged tricolour peppers in October. The line makes use of micro-perforated tubs which keep the product's respiration under control, thereby extending their shelf life.
This has been achieved thanks to the culmination of a research project conducted by the Soil Science and Applied Biology Centre of the Segura (Murcia); an entity under the National Research Council (CSIC), for La Unión, called "Project for the treatment and packing of courgettes, cucumbers and sweet peppers."
As revealed by this study, packed tricolour peppers achieve a shelf life of 20 days, longer than that of fresh vegetables in conventional containers, due to their protective atmosphere and preservation between eight and ten degrees Celsius.
Under the brand ALDEA VERDE, this innovation will allow Alhóndiga La Unión, presided by Gabriel Barranco Fernández, to reach markets in farther away destinations, without being limited to the traditional markets, which are often well-supplied and in some cases even saturated.
Some of the destinations that are currently under the radar for La Unión for this new line are Russia and the United States, although in the 2013/2014 campaign, when they will be introduced, work will focus on the platforms farther away from the current clients.
This way Alhóndiga, based in the town of El Ejido, will be able to continue commercialising products under the ALDEA VERDE brand, despite the closure of its processing plant.
