Walmart's Indian expansion has stalled. Sources from the company say that the chain is unlikely to apply for its first retail store licence before Spring 2015, stating that, even after government approval fro each store had been granted, it needed a further 12 to 18 months to open it. This means that the first store would not be opened until 2016 at the earliest.
The delay in application stems from the ongoing bribery probe relating to Walmart's Indian operations in partnership with Bharti. It could well mean that Walmart will miss out on the opportunity to be the first international player to enter the country after the unveiling of Foreign Direct Investment.
