Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL (CPF) has been granted ProSustain Standard certification from Det Norske Veritas (DNV), a well-known managing risk for sustainable foundation, to the company’s chicken product as both the world’s first producer as well as the first one in Asia-Pacific region to be approved.
The DNV certification has proved CPF’s efficiency in design, development and manufacturing control for sustainability, focusing quality and food safety through the international standards in its value chain. The policy draws to ensure the company achieve ‘Green Economy’ production in response to global market demand. It is also the company’s important path to capture more business opportunity as ‘Kitchen of the World’, which draws to create food safety, food security through sustainable economy.
Today, Mr. Antonio Astone, Global sustainability manager of DNV and Mr.Teerasak Urunanon, Chief Operation Officer of Domestic Trading, jointly chair in the press conference to drive CPF steps forward to achieve green business. The press conference holds at CPF’s headquarter in Bangkok.
DNV (Det Norske Veritas) is an independent foundation with the purpose of safeguarding life, property, and the environment. Its operation blends with technology and business understanding used to assess, evaluate and manage the risks involved in numerous high-profile projects around the world.
Mr.Astone said manufacturers should more integrate with customers and suppliers through the life cycle approach. In addition, they need to engage more with stakeholders and undertake more industry standard particularly manufacturing for sustainability.
“CPF is the first chicken producer in the world and Asia-Pacific region to receive DNV certification which will allow the company to respond more the market’s need,” said Antonio.
Mr.Teerasak said CPF’s Product Sustainability Project had been initiated to ensure integrated business development in accordance with world sustainable standards. It also designed to balance economy, social and environment in line with green economic policy.
The company’s project has come out with good result in reducing carbon dioxide releasing of more than 260,000 tons per year. For instance, CPF Processing Plant at Minburi, Bangkok, which has come under its pilot project on carbon footprint help reduce both green-house effects by more than 15,000 tons and bunger oil by 400,000 tons per year since the program started in 2010.
CPF’s products which were approved sustainable certification including fresh and roasted chicken strip making the company world’s first chicken producer and the first one in Asia-Pacific region. The plant has undertaken sustainable manufacturing throughout its value chain from upstream to downstream.
At present, CPF’s fresh and processed chicken products has been marketed both in Thailand and export through modern trade channel. Particularly, the export to Scandinavian area including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland under Kitchen Joy brand. It is one of the most popular brand in the region to control lion’s share of 70% in Denmark and 94% in Finland.
Mr.Teesasak said consumers are focused on purchasing more on products with carbon footprint label as well as products that reach low carbon dioxide releasing. As a result, manufacturers have to produce products that serve the market need. This shows the cooperation between consumer and manufacturers.
“The certification will enhance manufacturers concentrate more on their manufacturing process that reduces energy consumption and concerns more environmental safe,” said Mr.Teerasak.
