Almeria doubles export canned vegetables

The United Kingdom buys 57% of the canned vegetables exported by the Spanish province of Almeria, while France is the main customer for the province's olives (almost 70% of the shipments) and the Netherlands is the number one destination for Almeria's modest fruit preserve exports (with 38%).

Additionally, Almeria's canning firms receive orders for processed vegetables from the Czech Republic, Brazil, Australia or Lithuania, while the province's olives are also consumed, in small amounts, in Mexico and the United States.

With 171 transactions during this year's first semester, Almeria's horticultural canning companies exported almost 3.7 million kilos of products; this represents a 96% increase in volume compared to the same period in 2012. These shipments brought over 4.5 million Euro in revenue; a 103% growth, according to data elaborated by the Regional Delegation of the Andalusian Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment from the latest Icex report.

Almost 2.5 million kilos of canned vegetables were exported until June, which represents a 381% increase compared to the same period last year. Their value amounted to 3.3 million Euro, around 290% more than last year. Almeria is fifteenth in the Spanish ranking of canned vegetable exporters, with 1% of the country's total.
