Meat processor Dawn Meats has won the award for ‘Environmental Impact’ at the South West Wales Chamber of Commerce Business Awards 2014, run in association with the University of South Wales.

This environmental award recognises Dawn Meats as a pioneer in the environmental sustainability of agriculture and food processing for its development and implementation of a robust sustainability programme at its retail packing facility in Cross Hands, Wales.

Dawn Meats introduced this programme to its retail packing facility in an attempt to reduce water and energy consumption by 20 per cent in 2015.

The project results exceeded both of these targets by the end of 2013, delivering a 65 per cent reduction in water consumption and a 50 per cent reduction in energy consumption.

Commenting on the awards, Michelle White, from Dawn Meats, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have won the Environmental Impact Award at the South Wales Chamber of Commerce Awards.

"The consequences of climate change for our planet are far-reaching, impacting on water resources, agriculture and public health, and we recognise that we have a responsibility to ensure that we function as sustainably as possible.

"Investment in equipment, coupled with the hard work of our staff, has ensured that we surpassed our water and energy targets and, while there is still more work to be done in this area, we’re delighted to have received this award in recognition of our achievements this far.”
