Core Tip: Sales of organic meat, poultry and fish advanced 11 percent to $675 million, the Organic Trade Association (OTA) reported.
Sales of organic meat, poultry and fish advanced 11 percent to $675 million, the Organic Trade Association (OTA) reported. Overall sales of organic products in the United States jumped 11.5 percent to $35.1 billion, up from $31.5 billion in 2012.

"The US organic market is experiencing strong expansion, with organic food and farming continuing to gain in popularity. Consumers are making the correlation between what we eat and our health, and that knowledge is spurring heightened consumer interest in organic products," said Laura Batcha, executive director and CEO of OTA.

OTA reported organic food sales in 2013 accounted for roughly 92 percent of total organic products sales with a value of $32.3 billion. The packaged and prepared organic food segment is showing rapid expansion. OTA reported the segment grew 10 percent in 2013 to $4.8 billion.

Nutrition Business Journal conducted the surveyed, which included responses from more than 200 companies. The survey was conducted this year from Jan. 27 through April 4. Companies gave data on revenues reported, sales growth, revenue by product and sales channel breakdowns.
