ported nearly 90,000 tons of pepper for US$600 million in the first five months this year, a 50 percent increase year-on- year, the chairman of the Vietnam Pepper Association, Do Ha Nam, has said.This performance brings the year’s export target of $1 billion within arm’s reach, he added.
Last year exports were worth $900 million, with over 132,000 tons shipped.
Pepper prices have remained high for the last several years. Farmers now earn VND150,000 for a kilogram while their costs are less than a fourth of the amount.
Vietnam is by far the world’s largest pepper supplier, accounting for 50 percent of the global volume.
