Core Tip: An official in Iran’s Food and Drug Organization said last Wednesday that a series of tests on smuggled oranges, lemons and apples have revealed that the amount of pesticides found in the fruits exceeds the standard level, Fars news agency reported.
Hossein Rastegar said that a large amount of citrus fruits and apples have been trafficked into Iran illegally, but inaccessibility to farmers and smugglers of such agricultural produce has made it impossible to take legal actions against them.

“Food smuggling is a serious challenge facing our country, and it requires serious and extensive planning to counter it,” Rastegar said.

The smuggled fruits can seriously threaten citizens’ health, because there is no proper supervision over their original cultivation, additionally, it can also harm our domestic production of fruits,” Rastegar said.

“Iran is a country where its fruit production exceeds that of its consumption and where varieties of fruits are exported, therefore, illegal import of fruits is just unjustifiable,” he concluded
