Core Tip: With good production of mangos out of Mexico, the imports that have made their way into the United States have been plentiful. As there has been a consistent supply, the market has remained steady.
“Mexico production is on a record-setting pace at the moment and the only thing stopping this would be rain,” said Gary Clevenger of Freska Produce. “All in all, its been a very high volume year with lots of promotional opportunities available for retail.” By the end of last month, just over 35.0 million boxes of mangos had been shipped from Mexico, which is about 25 percent more than the 28.1 million boxes that were shipped by the end of May last year.

“With record setting volumes we have had a lot more fruit than usual,” said Clevenger, “and getting promotions in place has been the biggest challenge to keep things moving.

“Prices have been around the threes for a while,” he added, “and they will remain there until volume from Mexico slows.” On June 5, prices for a flat of Kent 6s were between $2.75 and $3.75 at Mexico crossings through Texas, and flats of Tommy Atkins 6s were between $2.75 and $3.50.
