Cherry and apricot prices remain high and stable

Core Tip: The first stage of Catalonia and Aragon's stonefruit campaign has been marked by high and stable prices as a result of a drop in the production volumes of the early varieties, especially for apricots.
"At the moment there is less pressure on prices compared to last year, since volumes are smaller," explains Xavi Juvillà, manager of Viyefruit.

"Cherry prices, which always start at very high levels at the beginning of the campaign and then usually fall sharply, remain for now at an intermediate, very satisfactory level. It seems that this situation will continue, since the cherries from the Jerte Valley have already hit the market and sales continue apace with good prices. We hope this trend will continue during the remainder of the campaign; it would be very positive," states the producer and exporter.

Regarding apricots, despite the fact that the acreage has slightly increased in Catalonia, Xavi points out that frost in April caused significant declines in some areas, and this has taken a toll on the market.

Although there was uncertainty in the sector about the possible impact of the Russian ban, which was introduced when the cherry and apricot campaigns were practically finished, "the current situation is allowing the market to absorb the production with very little impact from the veto. We will have to wait until June, when the bulk of the production is expected to arrive, to find out the extent to which we'll be affected by it," he concludes.
