"Normally it is sold for 13 dollars, but at the moment it barely exceeds 11.50 dollars. Demand is very low in Europe and we've gone from exporting five containers a week to just two," points out David Rubio Velázquez, of RAMAMY ORGANICS.
This situation seems to be affecting other Mexican exporters, not only of organic bananas, but also of organic Fair Trade.
"Fair Trade prices have also dropped, which has led us to rethink the idea of investing to get this certification, as it is very expensive and today, seeing how uncertain the market is, it is unclear whether we would obtain a return of the investment," he states.
Meanwhile, Mexican shipments to the United States have remained stable, although a drop in demand is expected after 4 July, since it happens every year.
With regard to climatic factors, "the weather has been excellent in the main producing areas. The hurricane season has started, but it has been mild so far and Hurricane Carlos, near the Pacific coast, has not caused any serious problems."
The good weather has resulted in higher yields, which could be a cause for the lower prices. David points out that they don't expect the situation to improve in the coming months and that we'll have to wait until early 2016 to see a change in the downward trend.
