More than half of the seafood processing factories in Myanmar have temporarily shut down due to a lack of raw materials, according to local media.

U Hnin Oo, vice chairman of the Myanmar Fisheries Federation, told reporters 80 of the nation’s 150 seafood processing facilities had shut down, which he said was caused by depleted stocks.

The vice chairman called for government assistance in building up the capacity of the country’s fisheries, including offering infrastructure and research. The vice chairman did not tell the media how long the processing plants might remain closed.
