General Mills has recalled its Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios cereal, labelled gluten-free, after finding the products contained undeclared wheat.
The company recalled an estimated 1.8 million boxes, which were manufactured at its Lodi, California facility.
According to the company, the latest development represents a Class I product recall, since it is related to an undeclared allergen with potential adverse health effects.
The recalled Cheerios and Honey Nut Cheerios began appearing in the market in late July this year.
The company stated the reason for the incident was that wheat flour had inadvertently been introduced into the gluten free oat flour system at its Lodi facility, the company stated.
The recall includes four days production of original Cheerios and thirteen days of production of Honey Nut Cheerios at Lodi.
The company said it will retrieve the affected cereals produced on those dates from customer warehouses and store shelves.
In addition, people with wheat allergies, celiac disease, or gluten intolerance should not consume products bearing the affected code dates, the company warned.
Consumers who brought the recalled product can contact General Mills for a replacement or full refund.
Currently, General Mills offers five varieties of gluten free Cheerios. According to the firm, other gluten-free Cheerios varieties are not impacted, and are not being recalled.
Recently, General Mills issued a voluntary recall of a limited quantity of frozen Cascadian Farm Cut Green Beans for fear of Listeria contamination.
The recall was initiated as a precautionary measure after a package of finished goods tested positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.
