The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has alerted consumers that Fresh Market has issued a precautionary recall for a number of cases of its “Organic Marketside Spring Mix Salad” after a container was found to contain bat body parts. According to the FDA, there is “minimal” risk of potential rabies contamination.

The recalled salad mix products were distributed by Fresh Market to WalMart stores to states across the Southeast: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Although the extraneous animal material was only found in a single container of the product, all “Organic Marketside Spring Mix Salad” containers that were manufactured in the same production run are being recalled. However, other Marketside and Fresh Express brands of salads are not affected by the recall.

The salad was packaged in 5-ounce clear containers with a “Best-if-used-by” date of APR 14, 2017 and the production code of G089B19 stamped on the front label. The UPC code, 6 8113132897, can be found on the bottom of the container.

Consumers who purchased the salad mix should dispose of it. They can also return it to the WalMart where they bought it for a complete refund.
