The President of the Jordan Exporters and Producers Association for Fruits and Vegetables, Mr Saadi Abu Hammad, reported a sharp decline in the price of most vegetable varieties sold to supermarkets, especially tomatoes, which have dropped to prices below the cost of the empty box.

In a press statement released on Sunday, it was announced that it is currently the peak production period for some regions, and that due to the volumes shipped exceeding the domestic demand and brokers facing trouble to find overseas buyers, prices have been affected, since many of the items sold at Central markets have actually had to wait for longer than a day to be marketed, pushing prices further down. This is especially the case for tomatoes, cauliflower, aubergine and potatoes.

Mr Abu Hammad warned that unless new marketing possibilities are found, prices will continue to drop significantly.
