Peru is one of the world biggest fruit exporting countries, with a total revenue of 5 billion US in 2015. It's revenue from non-traditional agricultural exports, such as grapes, are expected to increase by 20% in 2016.
Grapes are the countries biggest export product, with a total revenue of 690 million USD. The country is the fifth largest grape exporter in the world. In January alone, Peru's grape exports reached 100 million USD.
The main drive behind this increase is growing demand from Asia. Especially China in the weeks up to the Chinese New Year has become a major buyer of Peruvian grapes. Peru's grape export to China reached a new height with over 4,000 containers, which is equal to around 900 million boxes.
This year, Peru is expected to export 3,400 containers, which is a slight reduction. The main export variety to China is the red globe grape. Market prices have come down since Peru has increased overall production. Between 2015 and 2016, production increased from 270,000 tons to 285,000 tons. Over the same period prices came down by 15%.
