For the very first time, new strawberry breeds have been imported into Australia from Europe. The ''Berry United'' range has been imported by United Nurseries, a national wholesale nursery business. The range includes the pineberry, bubbleberry and strasberry breeds.
United Nurseries’s Phillip Nielson said the berries had been selling at Bunnings and would be available in garden centres throughout June and July.
“The pineberry is a white strawberry with a sweet pineapple tang and has become known as the reversed strawberry,” Mr Nielson said.
“The bubbleberry is a little pink strawberry with a slight bubblegum flavour and is perfect for cooking and making ice-cream and jam.
“The strasberry is a plump, juicy strawberry with raspberry characteristics and tastes like you have a strawberry and raspberry in your mouth at the same time.”
Mr Nielson said the company travelled the world to find the best new plant varieties and forgotten gems.
The pineberry variety was developed in Europe after white strawberries, which grow naturally in southern America, were imported to Europe and crossbred there.
It has taken four years to meet quarantine and biosecurity requirements in order to import the new strawberries.
