The Gala apple originally came from New Zealand. It is an early-season apple variety. In China the main apple producing areas in Shaanxi, Henan, Shandong, and Shanxi all produce large volumes of Gala apples. They enter the market every year in August. Their flavor is sweet, sour, and crisp. These apples can be found in every fruit store and supermarket because their price is relatively low.

The apple production areas in Shandong suffered from heavy rainfall this year. The overall quality of the Gala apple harvest is not great. The top-grade apples are scarce. Neither are there many merchants travelling to Shandong to buy Gala apples this year. The purchasing price is only around 1.2 yuan [0.18 USD] per 0.5 kg. The harvest is small and the quality is not great, furthermore, Shandong Gala apples have to compete with imported Gala apples from New Zealand and Chile. The imported Gala apples sell well.
