Core Tip: A new season of ginger production began in early October.
"A new season of ginger production began in early October. The bulk of the harvest season is expected to take place in early November. The current price for fresh ginger is at the same level as it was around this time last year, around 3.20 yuan [0.46 USD] per 0.5 kg." This is according to one fresh ginger farmer and retailer in China.

"Large volumes of fresh ginger were flooded during the period of excessive rainfall on August 19th. The product variety decreased and the number of insects greatly increased. This has left very little high-quality fresh ginger for the export market. The fresh ginger export market is likely to suffer great price fluctuations in the near future."

"Even though the extreme weather conditions reduced the production volume, an increase in surface area devoted to fresh ginger production in turn increased the production volume, so that the overall production volume remained stable on the same level as last year."

"As for international market competition. Chinese fresh ginger has to compete with organic ginger from Chile, ginger from Brazil, and ginger from Thailand. Organic ginger from Chile is a particularly strong competitor. This is on the one hand because of the unique character and the excellent product quality of organic ginger from Chile, but on the other hand also because in recent years more and more counterfeit Chinese ginger has entered the market, which is harmful for the market reputation of genuine fresh ginger from China."
