The banana market has been very quiet for some weeks now. "There are more bananas and many inexpensive brands on the market. That is causing enormous pressure on the prices. There have never been so many bananas on the market," says Arnoud Klootwijk of Ben van der Waal Zuidvruchten from Rotterdam.
"The green ones from renowned labels are still selling at reasonable prices. Those from less reputable labels are quickly being sold for EU6-8. You can get product that has been around for a while for half that price."
The banana market needs to be revived at some point in the future. However, according to Arnoud, there must first be less supply on the market. "That will happen anyway when it is winter in South America. Then the better products and brands will remain. But, I expect it to be January before that happens. Hopefully, prices will get a bit of a boost then too. The price level of the past few weeks has not been any fun", he concludes.
