Five container transport companies want to create an association with the purpose of paving the way for the digitalization, standardization, and interoperability of the container transport industry.
The executives of AP Moller - Maersk, CMA CGM, Hapag-Lloyd, MSC, and Ocean Network Express are discussing the creation of common information technology standards that will be available openly and free of charge to all interested parties in the container transport industry.
"Container transport companies operating with a common set of information technology standards would benefit customers and all interested parties," said Andre Simha, MSC's CIO and spokesperson for the group.
"Our goal is to have less bureaucracy and better transparency. The timing is right, as emerging technologies create new opportunities for the customer. Together, we gain strength in delivering technological advances and services to our customers when compared to working on our own," he added.
Need for a neutral and non-profit association
Even though the shipping industry already has several organizations and associations, the members of the group identified the need for a neutral and non-profit agency for maritime carriers, driven by the delivery of benefits to the industry and its stakeholders.
"That's why we will also welcome new members who want to join the association," Simha stated.
The association does not intend to develop or operate any digital platform, but aims to ensure interoperability through standardization. In addition, the association will not discuss any commercial or operational issues.
