The government of West Bengal has announced a new project that will prevent bananas from spoiling, help growers market their produce and to get better prices for this product.

Nandini Chakraborty, Secretary of Agriculture, Food Processing and Horticulture told media that there are around 370,000 banana growers in the state. The new scheme is designed to help them.

She said tissue culture banana will be cultivated over an estimated area of 700 hectares in Nadia and Murshidabad districts as part of the new project worth Rs 232 million (€2.88 mln). Here the state government will have a share of Rs 93 million (€1.15 mln), the participating cultivators for the same amount and the Keventer Agro group will contribute Rs 45 (€570,000).

The two districts selected for the 1st phase of the project are Murshidabad and Nadia. These had reported bumper and quality banana production in past few years.
