Strawberries entered the market before Chinese Spring Festival [February 5th, 2019]. The price was under pressure from competition with cherries. Many people looked at the price of strawberries between 40-50 yuan [5.96-7.45 USD] per 0.5 kg and decided to buy something else. The second wave of strawberries entered the market after the Spring Festival. The price dropped in response to consumer behavior and is only one third of the price prior to Spring Festival.
The weather is relatively warm, rainfall is scarce, and both plant diseases and insect pests have weakened. This in turn resulted in a larger production volume and therefore a more reasonable price. The price naturally differs based on product size and quality, but in general the price of strawberries is around 10 yuan [1.49 USD] per 0.5 kg.
The supply of high-quality fruit in Xiamen Market is abundant this year. There are also more strawberry varieties for sale than last year. High-quality strawberries from Japan gradually enter Xiamen. They rely on brand recognition, gift box packaging, and p2p distribution, which comes at a price. Japanese strawberries still cost between 40-80 yuan [5.96-11.92 USD] per 0.5 kg.
