This summer, it is all smiles on the faces of local fruit sellers and their customers in the Bangladesh district of Nilphamari, as there is an abundance of  fruit varieties in the district.

The Department of Agricultural Extension sources said the district yielded 2,695 tons of lychees, 115 tons of pineapples, 17,620 tons of jackfruit and 17,620 tons of mangoes this season.

Favorable weather this summer has contributed to the comparatively better yield of fruits, where lychee was cultivated on 350 hectares, pineapple on eight hectares, jackfruit on 515 hectares, and mangoes on 1,295 hectares.

Most of the yield was secured from Sadar, Domar, Dimla, Jaldhaka, Kishorganj and Syedpur sub-districts. The use of advanced technologies has certainly raised the yields, said DAE Deputy Director Md Abul Kashem Azad.  He added that there is, however, a great need for fruit preservation facilities in the district.
