According to the secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development of the state of Jalisco, Alberto Esquer Gutierrez, the most affected crops by Hurricane Lorena and tropical storm Narda were mango and banana crops; as 1,200 hectares of bananas were affected by these weather events.
Regarding the possible increase in fruit prices caused by this situation, Alberto Esquer said: “It will be more in the banana than in the mango; the damages in mango were minor. We expect the banana will recover in a year, but prices will increase a little in the coming months. We still have to wait for the production and commercialization of other states.”
The secretary also said that the affected producers would receive support through catastrophic insurance that has a coverage of 2,500 pesos per hectare damaged, as long as the producers no longer have their lands insured.
