A producer in Korkuteli, Antalya, grows heart shaped pears using plastic molds that he brought from China. The aim is to find new markets for pears.
As the pear harvest continues in Korkuteli, Antalya, "Karyagdi" pears are exported and also consumed domestically. Lately, producers started to look for new ways to increase the popularity of the product. Pear producer Sukru Dogrul brought special plastic molds from China. Now he grows heart shaped pears in these transparent plastic molds.
"For the last two years, "karyagdi" pear producers have made a loss. Not only producers, but also traders made a loss." said producer Sukru Dogrul and he continued: "We aim to create a new market. Our input costs increase every year. At the beginning of the season, pears are sold for 2 to 2,2 Turkish Lira (0,31 to 0,34 Euro), however these prices don't increase, on the contrary they decrease. This year was no exception. The opening price was 2 to 2,2 Turkish Lira (0,31 to 0,34 Euro) but nobody now sells for this price. Pear prices ranges from 1,3 to 1,7 Turkish Lira (0,20 to 0,27 Euro). We are trying new tactics to sell our pears in domestic and foreign markets and this year we started growing heart shaped pears in order to create new markets and sell our products."
