Core Tip: Demand for Valencia oranges is higher than expected.
Demand for Valencia oranges is higher than expected. Although weather issues in various countries is one explanation, the fact that the coronavirus still has a large presence in the world also contributed to the need for products that are rich in vitamin C. For one exporter, the focus will be on the European and Asian markets.

Egyptian fruit exporter Mazeed Produce has just started with its Valencia season and according to Reham Kamal, export manager for the company, is looking forward to a strong season: “For us, the season for Valencia oranges has kicked off here in Egypt in the third week of January. We’re seeing a great demand from European countries, India and China when it comes to oranges this season. A reason for the increased demand could be due to the weather problems in Spain this year. However, with Covid-19 still soaring in the world, the fact oranges are rich in vitamin C could also have a strong impact on the demand.”

Prices for Valencia oranges are slightly higher than last year, mostly due to the increase in freight prices, Kamal explains. “Mazeed Produce expects to export around 2000 tons of Valencia oranges this season. Most of these oranges will find their way to Europe, India, China, Bangladesh, Russia and the Gulf countries. There are challenges in terms of logistics, as the freight rates have increased all over the world. This has led to a slight increase in the Valencia prices, compared to previous years, however the price increase is nothing too shocking. We’re prepared for a solid season, and believe strongly in the quality of our produce.”
