Core Tip: Eckrich, the brand owned by US-based John Morrell Food, has launched new Lower Sodium Smoked Sausage, for consumers who are seeking to cut their sodium intake.
The company noted that the new product delivers 33% less sodium as compared to USDA data for smoked sausage. The product features an all-natural sodium alternative, which provides flavor with one-third less sodium as compared with other smoked sausage products.

John Morrell Food marketing, innovation and R&D vice president Charles Gitkin said the company looked at research showing that there is a group of consumers who are looking for food options with less sodium.

"We are now able to deliver a product that has the same great taste of Eckrich with less of the sodium they are trying to avoid," Gitkin added.

The new offering is the latest item launched as part of an initiative to offer lower-sodium alternatives by John Morrell Food, a subsidiary of Smithfield Foods.

John Morrell Food also offers items such as John Morrell 50% Less Sodium Bacon, Armour Lower Sodium Pepperoni, with 50% less sodium versus its regular pepperoni, and Eckrich Lower Sodium Hard Salami.

The new product will be available in 13-ounce packages in stores this fall alongside other Eckrich smoked sausage offerings.
