The Atlantic Canada Fish Farmers Association (ACFFA) is applauding two new salmon farms in Jordan Bay, Nova Scotia, as “another solid step” in an ongoing aquaculture strategy for the province.
The approved new farms, produced by Cooke Aquaculture, are expected to generate 27 new jobs. The new venture comes on the heels of other work the company has done in Nova Scotia, including expanding its Truro feed mill, building a hatchery in the Digby area and building a processing plant in the Shelburne area.
Overall, Nova Scotia’s salmon farming industry employs 670 people and generates about CAD 80 million. The province is working to expand that, noting that in Charlotte County, New Brunswick alone, 1,870 people work in salmon farming, and in Newfoundland, the industry has grown by 50 percent in a single year alone, worth CAD 90 million in 2010.
“Our salmon farmers are committed to building a world-class, responsible and sustainable aquaculture industry,” Pamela Parker, ACFFA’s executive director, said in a statement. “They know that aquaculture, the traditional fishery and tourism together can provide a diversified economic base for coastal communities and they are committed to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to grow this sector as set out in Nova Scotia’s Aquaculture Strategy.”
