The Scotch whiskey industry generates more than £4bn per year, according to a report ‘Scotch Whisky & Scotland’s Economy - A 100-Year Blend’ by Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), a UK-based organization that promotes, protects and represents the interests of the whiskey industry in Scotland and around the world.
According to the research, the industry generates most of its income from overseas investment. Of the £4.2bn, around £2.9bn is generated from the Scotch whiskey industry and around £1.3bn from the supply chain. The Scotch whiskey industry also accounts for around 36,000 jobs overall.
SWA CEO Gavin Hewitt told scotsman.com that Scotch whiskey plays an important role in building the Scottish economy, which is proved by the new research.
"The report shows Scotch whisky is likely to play an increasingly important role in Scotland's export markets," he added.
"The momentum of growth needs to be better nurtured by both the UK and Scottish Governments. Scotch whisky underpins their ambitions for export-led recovery."
