Core Tip: The value of Norwegian seafood exports in January totalled NOK 4.8 billion. This is an increase of NOK 636 million or 15 per cent compared to January last year, according to the latest figures from the Norwegian Seafood Council.
“The growth seen in January is due primarily to an increase in exports of Norwegian Salmon,” comments Egil Ove Sundheim, director of market information with the Norwegian Seafood Council. “Strong demand meant that Norwegian Salmon producers exported more salmon and at higher prices than in the same period last year. In addition, we have noted that lower prices for Norwegian Cod have resulted in increased export volumes for cod products.”
Growth in export volume and price for Norwegian Salmon
The value of Norwegian Salmon exports in January totalled NOK 2.8 billion. This is an increase of NOK 834 million or 43 per cent compared to January last year. The average price for fresh whole Norwegian Salmon increased from NOK 25.83 to NOK 34.66 per kg. In the same period, the volume of exports of all Norwegian Salmon products increased by 8,000 tonnes to a total of 77,000 tonnes. France, Poland and Russia were the biggest importers of Norwegian Salmon.
Exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout show strong growth
In January, exports of Norwegian Fjord Trout increased in value by NOK 102 million or 101 per cent to a total of NOK 203 million. Russia was the biggest market for Norwegian Fjord Trout in January.
Exports of herring and mackerel down
The value of exports of Norwegian Herring in January declined by NOK 240 million or 40 per cent to a value of NOK 365 million from January last year. The steepest fall was in exports to Ukraine, down in value by NOK 75 million to a total of NOK 21 million. Russia was the biggest market for Norwegian Herring, with exports in January valued at NOK 92 million, down by NOK 63 million compared to the same month last year.
In January, exports of mackerel from Norway fell in value by NOK 208 million or 54 per cent to a total of NOK 180 million. Exports to China showed the biggest fall, down by NOK 66 million to a total of NOK 25 million. Russia was the biggest market for mackerel from Norway, with exports in January valued at NOK 26 million, down by NOK 13 million from January last year.
Growth in clipfish exports
Exports of clipfish were up in value in January by NOK 74 million or 22 per cent to a total of NOK 414 million. Exports to Brazil showed the biggest growth, up in value by NOK 36 million to a total of NOK 250 million. Exports to Portugal increased in value by NOK 30 million to a total of NOK 77 million.
Exports of salted fish stable
The value of exports of salted fish in January totalled NOK 37 million, on a par with January last year. Portugal remains the biggest market for salted fish from Norway, with exports in January valued at NOK 16 million. This is NOK 2 million up on January last year. Exports to our second biggest market, Spain, fell in value in January by just under NOK 1 million to a total of NOK 10 million.
Growth in exports of fresh and frozen Norwegian Cod
In January, the value of exports of fresh and frozen Norwegian Cod increased by NOK 37 million or 8 per cent to a total of NOK 520 million. Denmark was the biggest market, with exports in January valued at NOK 110 million. Denmark was also the market with the biggest growth, with exports in January up by NOK 25 million compared to the same month last year.
